An outside consultant isn't always the answer — sometimes the issue just needs a firm internal decision.
One question we hear a lot is: "do we actually need a consultant?" The honest answer is: not always.
When an outside consultant makes sense
When the internal team lacks the needed expertise and building it from scratch isn't economically justified
When you need an unbiased view that isn't entangled in internal politics
When time is limited and you need to move faster than your current team's capacity
When it isn't necessary
If the real issue is simply a lack of firm management decision-making, no consultant can substitute for that decision. An outside consultant is a tool for execution, not a replacement for management will.
How to pick the right consultant
Look for someone who asks "what's the measurable goal of this project" before pitching a solution. A consultant who sells a pre-packaged bundle without fully hearing the problem is chasing a contract, not solving your issue.
